A note from our Principal
Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior.” Psalm 25:4-5

It was over ten years ago that I attended the Torchbearers Bible School on Thetis Island in Canada. I wanted to separate myself from the busyness of life to deepen my walk with the Lord and to know Him more clearly and personally. It proved to be an outstanding time. I was challenged, humbled, and came to know Christ more intimately than ever before. For me it was a combination of the teaching, the personal Bible study, time spent in God’s creation and the relationships formed with staff and students that served to grow in me a deeper understanding and love for the Lord.
Let me tell you about the Bible school program at Torchbearers Yamanakako. The duration of the spring school this year is 8 weeks and focuses on personal discipleship rather than on academics. Our ultimate goal and purpose in everything we do here is to “equip the saints [namely you] for the work of the ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God…” Ephesians 4:12-13. That means that we want to see you know the Lord in such a way that He radically affects the way that you view yourself, others, and the way that you live.
At Torchbearers Yamanakako, we learn together as a community by living daily life together and studying God’s Word on our own and collectively. There are lectures and classes in the mornings and some evenings, with occasional assignments and projects designed to equip you to continue learning and growing long after Bible school is finished. One day per week we get out of the classroom and serve by working together around the property and the community. Our goal is to transfer the truth that we are learning in our heads and hearts into practical service with our hands. The cultural setting here is unique. Students from abroad will get a taste of the Japanese culture in terms of language, food, general behavior patterns, etc. It can be very enjoyable and stretching to be exposed to a different culture, and I think that you will find the Japanese culture to be fascinating and rich. Christ has and is continuing to reveal Himself through the Japanese people and culture. It is nearly impossible to experience life in Japan and not be changed forever.
The classes and lectures will be in English, so it is good to be able to understand and speak English reasonably well. The meals will be mainly western style, with opportunities to experience authentic Japanese cuisine as well.
For those of you in college or university, consider joining us after your studies are finished for the year and before your summer work gets started. We encourage all ages, even those already retired, to attend. People from all walks of life are not only invited, but highly treasured. Growing to love each other and value one another’s differences serves to enhance our time together and to teach us what it means to be the body of Christ. It is amazing what God can teach us though one another, where in much of our world differences only serve to create barriers.
I am very excited about the upcoming school year and all that the Lord has in store for us to learn together. I am already praying that the Lord would send to us those who He desires to be here this year. So please prayerfully consider whether He would have you join us in Japan for this year’s Bible school.
In Christ,
Steve Frentz
